Hope for Tohoku
“Hope for Tohoku” is an installation that conveys hope for the recovery of Japan after the earthquake and tsunami that struck the northeastern region of the country in March 2011. Portraits drawn in white marker on delicate tracing paper creates a ghostly effect, portraying the loved ones and possessions that people lost to the disaster. Origami paper cranes hanging from the ceiling represent the Japanese myth that one’s wish would be granted if they constructed one thousand cranes. The tactile use of these methods is my way of reconciling with not being able to be in Japan to help people rebuild.
